Cardinal Gibbons faced off against Melbourne Palm Bay in the Florida Region 4-5A quarterfinal in what ended in a 20-point victory for Gibbons.
Palm Bay looked good early with two-straight three pointers to open the game, but then the Chiefs came back with an 18-0 run. In the second quarter, the Pirates got within six points of Cardinal Gibbons, but that was the closest they would threaten the Chiefs lead.
Never letting off the gas pedal, Gibbons led by double digits for most of the second half. To accompany the Chiefs scoring, an impenetrable defense shut down Palm Bay’s scorers all night, forcing 19 turnovers.
Junior forward Maverick Rowan led the way with a game-high 24 points. Senior Jose Morales, a crucial figure on both offense and defense, drained 15 on the night.
Now 29-1, Cardinal Gibbons stands in 23rd in the DigitalSports National Basketball Rankings and 2nd in Florida.
The Chiefs will face Dillard in the semifinals on Tuesday, February 17.
